Part 1: Passing Strangers featuring Steve
Hogarth
It was in a cool Friday evening that the "already
famous" PASSING STRANGERS played at the EGO BAR (Complexo Miravillas),
in Praia de Mira, on their second Marillion tribute show. Despite
arriving for the soundcheck five hours late (to the disappointment
of some early arrived fans, and to the despair of the bar's owner),
the magnificent four showed to be at ease on this celebration concert.
The audience, lived anxiously the antecipation of the next day's
concert, first in small number that increased as the evening went
on, they were a mix of unconditional Marillionados, and usual costumers.
Few of them were ready for the surprise that was about to happen.
Not many people knew by then, but Steve Hogarth had called the band
during the gig's short break, to propose them to play something
with him as soon as he arrived from the airport. During "Easter"
the audience saw Marillion's singer arriving, and taking his place
by the side of the stage, following the band's performance with
a smile.
When the song was over Steve Hogarth greeted his four new bandmates,
ordered a beer, and the improvised quintet started "Living
with the Big Lie" (from the album "Brave"). After
a wonderful performance where only the ear-to-ear grins dennounced
this was not a routine concert, Steve started singing "The
Answering Machine", followed by the guitar of Miguel Baptista.
The duo performed this "Radiation" song, and after a new
conference to choose a new theme, they started playing "The
Great Escape" (again from "Brave"), with the whole
band again.
No one could disguise their happiness and surprise. Everyone felt
something magical was taking place. Due to the excellent way voice
and music mingled, due to the spontaneity, due to Steve Hogarth's
generousity and humbleness, those who were present won't forget
those moments in a long time.
Below you can see the pictures of the evening. The concert proceeded
after Steve went to his hotel, and even included a surprise version
of "Grendel" played on Portuguese Acoustic Guitar.
